Slide guitarists given useful tips

Electric guitar players who invest in a slide bar have been given some playing tips by a top blues player.

Speaking to the Gibson website, Roy Rogers said musicians need to know the correct angle at which the bottleneck should be placed.

Holding the slide bar at a right angle to the neck would ensure that blues guitarists are able to play in tune over the fret, he stated.

Rogers also recommended that slide guitarists avoid pushing down hard on the strings, as the string should not hit the fret.

He added that while there are lots of techniques that would-be slide guitarists should practice, they should also ensure it remains enjoyable.

"The most important thing to remember is to always have fun," Rogers commented.

"Don't let it become laborious."

Among the most notable practitioners of this playing style are Irish guitarist Rory Gallagher, blues pioneer Robert Johnson and late Beatle George Harrison.
